Australian Field Conference
December 26 to 30, 2002
Another year has gone by and an-other Field conference was scheduled. Visitors travelled from the far corners of Australia to enjoy the spiritual fellow-ship with their fellow believers. People travelled from Brisbane by car (1500 km) and from Melbourne (1500 km) and Adelaide (2000 km). And also once again several dear believers made the long journey across the continent (over 4000 km) by car from Perth to partake of the spiritual feast that was to be ex-perienced. Also from outside of Austra¬lia, Brother Joel Barnedo arrived from the Philippines and two sisters from Canada were present. Once again our tent city was set up in the back yard of the church. With our small chapel full to overfl owing, our conference commenced on Thursday evening.
Two days before the main conference, two days were dedicated to the young people. On the fi rst day, we travelled by car for one hour to the Blue Mountains to hike to the bottom of the valley. Go-ing down was easy, but coming back up required more energy and not everyone was able to make the journey to the bot¬tom. The strongest young people did the entire hike, while some of the older ones took a more gentle hike, remaining close to the top.
On the second day three workshops were held for the young people on issues that concern the youth today. They were entitled, "Youth in Prophecy," "Church Membership," and "Love, Courtship and Marriage." We are living very close to the end of time and Satan has many enticements for the youth to get their eyes off the goal ahead. He is trying to distract them from what is important to¬day. Prophecy is fast fulfilling and the youth need to use their energies for the Lord rather than waste them with the things of this world. It is time for them to decide to serve the Lord, and make their

Australian Field Conference
decision in baptism. While it is natural for every young person to want to fall in love and be married some day, this idea must not consume all their energies so that they have little left for the Lord. In the days of Noah they were 'eating and drinking, marrying and giving in mar¬riage' with no thought that very soon they would perish in the waters of the flood. Counsel was given to the youth regarding proper methods of courtship and what true love is. It is much differ-ent from the ways of this world as Sa¬tan has perverted this institute that God has created. Our young people need our prayers so that they will not be distract-ed, but keep their eyes on Jesus, on the goal that is set before them.
Thursday:
The theme of the conference was, "Arise, Shine." This theme was taken from the Bible verse, Isaiah 60:1, "Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee."
Brother Jerry Eaton, the President of the Australian Field opened the confer¬ence in the evening, welcoming those who had come from far away places. He compared the church to light, since we are called to be the light of the world.
If you look at light closely, it is made up of particles. White light is a mixture of all the colours. The particles making up light may seem to be moving around chaotically in their own small area, how-ever they are all travelling uniformly in the same direction, spreading light in the darkness. This is how the church is to move. We are active in our own small sphere, but we are all moving together, unitedly, in the same direction.
Brother Barnedo continued by re-minding us of the serious time in which we live. Momentous events are taking place in the world today. Terrorism is on the rise. However in this time of darkness, Ellen G. White saw in vision streams of light going around the world. We are to be a part of this light. We are praying for the Latter Rain. In order to receive the Latter Rain, Br. Barnedo shared with us several conditions which we must adopt in our lives and in the church. First we must be an enlightened people. We cannot share what we do not have. Then we must overcome and be a victorious people, as well as a loving people. For spiritual growth, we must all be a praying people and in order to have a clear mind, we need to be a temperate people. Last of all, in order to receive the

Seal of God, we must be a Sabbath-keep-ing people. In order to be a lighthouse for the Lord we need to keep our connection with Him strong.
Friday:
On Friday morning, Brother Glen Hig-
gins from Perth, West Australia spoke of

"And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn
away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts,
that they shall not depart from me."

Rain and how we will survive. To many the future brings only fear. For the people in the world, they have no concept of the future that the Lord has prepared for us. They only see what this world has to offer and it is not good. For the Christian that is not connected with Jesús, they see the triáis and persecutions that are to come to God's people and they are fi lled with fear. How will we survive? What prepares God's people? It is the 3rd Angel's message as it swells to a loud cry. It is the Latter Rain that revives and strengthens God's people to go through the Time of Trouble. Some feel that they will leave all needful preparation until the time of the Latter Rain, but we must prepare for the Latter Rain today. It will not automatically come upon us without any preparation on our part. A seed will not grow unless we take the seed and plant it. This is compared to the Word of God. It will do nothing for us unless it is planted in our hearts - we must pick it up and study it. The growing season for spiritual seed is a lifetime. In the par-able of the sower in Matthew 13, there are several reasons given why the seed of truth will not grow. Satan has many distractions to keep people from making the necessary preparation. It will be a sad time for some people who will come to the realization, that "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved." Jer. 8:20. Brother John Thiel continued by shar-ing with us, "The Glory of God in Earth-

en Vessels." We need to see the glory of God intelligently before we see it physi-cally. What is this glory of God? Is it a surge of supernatural thrill? The Glory of God has to do with a covenant. God has promised, "And I will make an ev-erlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them
good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me." Jer. 32:40.

A seed will

The Lord will not turn away from them. If you don't take hold of the glory of God, you will be bitterly disappoint-ed. You don't have to go to heaven or across the sea because the Word of God is very close. All you have to do is feel your pulse and you will see how close He is to you.
For Sabbath opening, Brother Joel Barnedo shared some thoughts regard-ing Creation and the beginning of the

Sabbath. The Lord gave us six days to labour and work, but gave us one day to rest. He went on to share many of his personal experiences he made in his mis-sionary endeavours. We were blessed to hear of how the Lord is still working mir-acles in human hearts today. Sabbath:
Sabbath morning dawned, bright and sunny. Our small chapel was full to over-flowing for the Sabbath School. The di¬vine service was conducted by Brother John Thiel. He brought our attention back to the theme, "Arise, Shine." There is a tone of immediacy in these words. Why? The bridegroom is coming - hurry - it's nearly too late. The SDA church, Christianity and Judaism all suffer under a disease called futurism. They are look-ing far into the future for the fulfilment of prophecies that are happening right around us today. Truly our time is as it was in the days of Noah, when people are so occupied with the affairs of this world that they have no time to pray and study. Jesus is anxious for our salvation but often we are so busy with family af¬fairs that we have little time for Him. He wants us all to be saved. We all need to be changed if we are to be ready. We must let the beauty of Jesus sink into our hearts and then it will change. His love will permeate our hard hearts. It will work until the whole being is cleansed. Today, time is almost fi nished. If you're a spiritual desert, don't worry there is
; take the seed and plant it. still a little time left, however we must act quickly. We must arise and shine. Let the rain come in and things will grow in our hearts. The angels are hurrying to and fro and what are we doing? This is a solemn time in which we live and we are to examine ourselves and let Jesus change and sanctify our hearts so we will be ready when He comes.
In the afternoon the children and young people presented a study on the

"Gifts of the Spirit." Each young person took one gift and shared with us the full meaning and duties required by the per-son who received the gifts. They were given to the church for the perfecting of the saints and believers are to work to-gether with their varying gifts.
Brother Glen Higgins again present-ed a subject concerning young people. "Arise and Shine for youth." No one is too young to shine for Jesus. He related to us stories from the lives of various pioneers of the Advent message. James White began preaching the first angel's message at the age of 21. He was bap-tized at the age of 15. Many other young men went out to preach the message at a young age. Who will God use to fi nish the work of the other Angel in Revela-tion 18? Not necessarily those that are most perfect or talented, but those who are the most willing to deny themselves for the gospel. Those who cherish and share the light they have, more will be given to them.
For Sabbath closing, Brother John Al-twein shared some of his experiences. When Joshua was about to enter the Promised Land, the Lord promised him, "arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, until the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Is¬rael. Be strong and of a good courage: be not afraid, neither be though dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee with¬ersoever thou goest." Joshua 1:2, 9. We are today on the borders of the Heavenly Canaan and we are to arise and go for-ward, and the Lord will be with us. The world will be against us, but we can't allow that to deter us. Daniel continued to pray and give thanks to the Lord even when the law of the land said he could

not pray to anyone except the king. Paul and Silas were singing while suffering in prison. We must thank God for His leading and for His promise to be with us until the end of time.

Sunday:
Sunday was devoted to the health mes¬sage. Being the right arm of the mes¬sage, we planned to share some of our knowledge of health principles and healing practices that we have come to
know. Brother John Thiel began the day. God created us wonderfully - perfect. Sin came in and marred that perfection. God gave Adam and Eve everything to enjoy, but when they started to enjoy that which was not theirs, it became
It is the same with us. Because of sin, today our bodies are totally de-ranged and we are to understand the health message and healing practices in order to reverse the deranged condi-tion. Brother Thiel spoke of the healing virtues of massage. Even good healing practices have been perverted by Satan, but massage, when used in the proper way soothes the body rather than stimu-lates the body. Our habits of living need to be changed slowly in order to bring our spiritual temples back into a condi-tion that the Holy Spirit would delight to dwell in. Sister Wendy Eaton continued by sharing some principles from the Bible

and Testimonies regarding correct eating habits. In the Bible we read, "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and do-eth it not, to him it is sin." James 4:17. This Bible verse refers also to the health message. If we eat something that we

"...Be strong and of a good courage: be not afraid, neither be though dis¬mayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest."

know is not good for us, it is sin. Being a health reformer means much more than giving up meat eating. Many of us are fa¬miliar with some of the counsels in Ellen G. White's book, Counsels on Diet and Foods, therefore, rather than list good foods and bad foods, Sister Eaton coun-selled everyone to think carefully about what they know is right and wrong. The sin against the Holy Spirit is continuing in sin when you know it is wrong - mak-ing no effort to change the sinful habits. Could a person who refuses to give up some foods that they love, but know are not good for them, eventually commit the sin against the Holy Spirit? This is a solemn thought which we each need to consider. Brother Eaton then gave some counsels regarding the importance of dressing for the honour and glory of God. Not only is modesty an issue, but practicality and dressing for the benefit of our health.
After lunch Sr. Nada Jeremic shared some spiritual reasons for following the health message. To maintain health we have to care for our health in the first place. Originally the brain was made by God as the capitol of the body but sin has perverted the noble powers of the brain. The electrical power of the brain, promoted by mental activity is a potent aid in resisting disease. The body should be servant to the mind, not the mind to the body. It is only through the central nervous system that God can speak to human souls. Our body is not our own, but God's property. We can't do anything with our bodies and still glorify God. The question is why are so many people sick today? Why are

________________________________
many diseases? It is the lack of harmonious action of the body that brings disease. The physical penalty of transgression is a ruined constitution. A continual transgression of physical law is a continual transgression of the 10 commandments. Through transgres¬sion man's power became perverted and he could no longer resist the force of temptation. God's desire is for us to give Him back our bodies in a pure and clean condition.
Sister Jenny Nalder spoke about poul-tices and how to use them. They are a valuable first-aid treatment for various ailments. Different people then shared their experiences with health and natu¬ral remedies that have worked for them. Brother Barnedo then shared missionary experiences from the Philippines regard-ing health lectures. The truth is simple, if it is not simple, it is not true. He encour-aged us all to go out with the health mes-sage and bring souls to Christ.
After supper, Brother Bill Wood spoke of the two classes of people in the world. Those in light and those in
darkness. God's people are not to cease communication until they encircle the world. We are all called to be mission¬aries for Jesus. We can be missionaries in our own neighbourhoods. A missionary is someone who spreads the gospel.
We now shared the Lord's supper to-gether. Brother Barnedo spoke of Jesus

We are all called to be missionaries for Jesus.

Christ. He became a man like you and me. Without Christ we must admit that we can do nothing. We must then submit ourselves to the Lord so we can transmit the light He has given us to others. If we follow Christ's example in doing good,

hearts will open to us as they did to Him. Jesus did not fi ght for his rights, but bore insults patiently.
Monday:
Monday morning it was time to say fare-
well. First we heard from Brother John
Thiel who spoke to us about the demoni¬acs who met Jesus. Can Jesus shine out of a mad man? The disciples fl ed, but Jesus did not. Neither do we need to fl ee if we meet demoniacs today. The demoniacs say, "don't bother me," but they stay in Jesus' presence. The flesh says, "I want to be with pigs," but the heart says, "I

want to be with Jesus." It has happened to all of us at one time or another. We want to say something but it comes out all wrong. This was the condition of the demoniacs, but in the presence of Jesus there was a struggle but the demons fi-nally left. These demoniacs desired to remain with Jesus, however Jesus sent
them out as missionaries. They had spent very little time with Jesus and had heard no sermons of His, but He sent them out with their testimony. So if you feel you have very little knowledge or that you shine very little, remember

those demoniacs had. They were the very fi rst missionaries that Jesus sent and they had no training, but they bore their testimony that Jesus was the Mes-siah. Later, when Jesus came to Decapo-lis the whole city went out to see Him. Many of those who preach the Loud Cry

Without Christ we must admit that we can do nothing.

Message will be as those recovered de¬moniacs. Their training is directly from the Holy Spirit so mighty works will be done through them.
Brother Barnedo shared his favourite text, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righ-teousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is writ-ten, the Just shall live by faith." Romans 1;16, 17. If we are only serving the Lord 90% we still have to give another 10%. He counselled us that if there are only a few members in a city, don't go to fallen churches for fellowship. Begin Sabbath Ser-vices in your own home. Invite your neighbours and friends. Be like Elijah, and don't worry if you are alone - let your light shine. If you go to a fallen church for fellowship, you will slowly become like those in the fallen church. The Lord does not need 10 or 20 thousand lukewarm believers, He only needs 2 or 3. They can have a great im-pact like Shadrach, Meshach and Aben-ego had in Babylon. He encouraged the literature evangelism work which is im-portant in reaching the hearts of people in the fi nal days of this world's history.
Brother Eaton shared 1 Kings 20:28. "And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, an said, Thus saith the Lord, Because the Syrians have said, The Lord is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into

________________________________
thine hands, and ye shall know that I am the Lord." We have all had a mountain top experience at the conference. Now we must go back home to the valleys. The Syrians said that Israel can't fi ght in the valleys, but God is also in the valleys. Our valley is what God is using to draw us closer to him.
We then were blessed by hearing tes¬timonies from the other believers. For several hours we heard experiences of God's providence inpeople's lives.
Our spiritual feast then came to a close. Our tent city came down and we all began returning to our homes deter-mined to shine even brighter for Jesus in our different corners of the continent. In many areas of Australia there is only one believer, or one family or just a few believers, however God only needs one faithful soul to shine out of the darkness that envelops their corner of the country. If we all would do our part to shine in our corner, soon this message will reach the entire world and Jesus will come. May we all be ready because the time is not far in the future. Amen.

The Samaritan's Good Works
"And the famine was sore in the land" (Genesis 43:1), says Moses in the first book of the Holy Scriptures when he speaks of the situation in the land of Canaan in the time of Jacob. The same Bible verse could be used to describe the condition of our planet today.
During that time, the patriarch sent his children to Egypt in search of provisions since the land around the Nile was very fertile. Moreover, as a result of the wisdom that God had given to His servant Joseph, Pharaoh's granaries were full of grain. Today, our brethren-victims of the famine that many countries are experiencing due to the climat-ic changes that are taking place in the whole planet, come to us (their brethren in prosperous countries) in search of help. With a burdened

heart, we want to share with our brethren, extracts from the letters we receive, espe-cially from Africa, as well as from other continents such as Asia and South Ameri¬ca, with the hope that like Joseph in Egypt, we too may be moved to compas-sion and generously fill up their sacks.
"There is untold hunger here in Zambia, because of weather conditions and inflation. Some survive by eating bush roots, others eat three times a week, while others are dying because of a lack of food, Prisoners are dying of hunger in large numbers. Not to men-tion, a large number of children who are suffering from malnutrition.
"My return flight from Holland was safe since God protected me. Two hours later, upon my arrival home, my brother in law died leaving 13 children and 12 grand children." (We should add that the brother who writes this letter also has 7 children and 11 orphans of his own at home.)
"...We are sorry to give this painful report, but on account of sin we always have to face these problems.."

"On 4 July 2002, we lost a beloved sis-ter while she was in labour. She passed away immediately after giving birth to a child. Sadly, this sister left behind a hus-band and two other children who until now have been in our care. Although the mission and the church have tried their best to help, our country is very poor, which prevents us from accomplishing much in this respect, so we kindly ask you to help us to buy food and to care for this family. Baby food is very ex-pensive, so please look at this case with merciful eyes." Good Samaritan Leader, Kisii, Kenya.
"We have had many problems in the Youth Department of our field as a re-

sult of poverty. This reason has also af-fected the progress of the church since the youth are a pillar of strength. We have 35 young people but most of them have had no education because they come from poor families. Our field is the poorest one due to drought and the insufficient amount of precipitation dur-ing rain season. We would like to start a project to help our youth so that they will not yield to temptation (often due to the misery in their lives), but unfor-tunately we lack funds." Youth Leader of the coastal region in Kenya.
"We are going through a very critical economic crisis, so I kindly ask you to help me meet my basic needs, because since my husband passed away, the situ-ation is very diffi cult." SRL, Peru.
"Last year I made many things to be able to collect money to help the poor but the only ones who bought something from me were my husband and my sis-ters. Now, I just help out in the most ur-gent cases, for instance, the sick people who are in hospital, etc. A brother from

H. called me because the union could not help him; with pain in my heart I told him that I could not do it either, then I knelt down and asked God to take care of him in his very diffi cult situation." LP, Dorcas leader, Perú.
"Prophetic events are fulfilling rap-idly before us. Great changes in cli-matic conditions and ongoing changes in nature announce that our Lord will soon come. The excessive amount of rain here in Kenya, has brought a mas-sive destruction to the country. Many people were left homeless and their an¬imals and crops were swept away by the floods. The government is trying to do all it possibly can, nevertheless, because there is great ethnic discrimination and because we are not political sympathiz-ers our case hardly comes to their no-tice. Personally, I am one of the victims of the strong winds and my house was destroyed. It is very difficult to offer a shelter to my family since I am weighed down with paying my children's school fees. Nobody can help me that is why I am addressing you." JO, Lake Victoria region, Kenya
"I am a widow and I have two school age children. My late husband did not
leave me anything. Throughout all this time I have laboured single-handedly to bring up these children, paying school fees as well as dressing and feeding them. But now I feel that I cannot cope with city standards of living and my wish is to go back to the country, buy a piece of land and produce my own food while I do some missionary work in search of souls" TN, Uganda.
We have been privileged with the opportunity to educate our children in the way of self denial, teaching them to choose the simple and necessary things in life. Therefore, it is our duty to teach them to joyfully set aside money to help other children who area not as fortunate as they are, so that they too may be able to get an education.
"I present to you the case of Alex... who became an orphan in 1997, at the age of seven. In May of this year, his father died and the boy is now with his grandmother who is a 65 year old widow. As brethren in the same faith we have provided them with clothing to cover their nakedness, but we need help to feed and educate the child who is still under age." RKB Good Samaritan secretary.

"S. M. with four sons and 2 daughters, R. Z. with seven children, S. O. with eight children, J. O. with four children and C. O. with three children became home-less as a result of the war. Many people have lost their houses and belongings. We have no roof and we cannot send our children to school. Any help will be highly appreciated." Good Samaritan Committee, Nairobi, Kenya.
"From 23 June to 15 July we visited one of our fi elds which is located in the centre of the country; we also held a seminar to instruct the people on how to work as good Samaritans, have a healthy diet that is approved by God and how to lead an orderly life. In the church at K. we met a widow with two children who cannot go to school because she does not have money for their school fees." Secretary of the field of the cen¬tral region, Kenya.
"The school year is over and our prob-lem is where to find money to pay the school fees, buy note books, textbooks, uniforms...etc, before school starts again.." MB Dorcas leader, Cameroon.
God, who declares: "Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine" (Job 41:11) gave instructions to his people regarding the way they had to treat the poor and the stranger: "And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners

of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy har¬vest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger." Leviticus 23:22. All the blessings that we receive from the Lord are not only for our own benefit, we are to share them with the unfortunate and needy without having to wait until they knock at our door, instead, like Job, we should go in
search of them in order to impart these
blessings upon them.
Our Duty to the Unfortunate In whichever direction we look, away from ourselves, we fi nd a humanity that suffers and groans under the heavy yoke of sin and its consequences. As light -bearers, chosen to serve, our Christian duty, or rather our privilege, is to give an attentive ear, to have a compassion-ate heart and an outstretched hand for all those who lacki material or spiritual support. If we have experienced the love of God in our life, that same love, "con-strains us" to do good to our neigh-bour.
In this world, ev-ery one is tested in a different way, the rich in his abun-dance, the poor in his poverty. In the Holy Scriptures we have striking exam-ples of how this test is faced by different people, for instance, we have the case of the rich young man (Matthew 19:16-22), of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10), and of the

of Sarepta (1 Kings 17:10-16). Although we may not belong to any of these extreme cases, we still need to wisely manage our income in order to lead a worthy life. Notwithstanding, the Lord expects a true conversion of heart which will be manifested through our generosity toward the helpless.
Job, who knew his Christian du-ties very well, in a conversation with the Lord searches his own heart to see whether he has neglected any of them: "If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; (for from my youth he was brought up with me, and with a father, and I have guided her from my moth-er's womb;) If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; if his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fl eece of my sheep; If I have lifted upon my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate; then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone." Job 31:16-22.
Widows and orphans abound among our people and we acknowledge the fact that the cases we know about are an in-significant part of what really exists. In Africa, there are many families that have

quite a few orphans in their homes, these are not well-to-do families, but broth-ers and sisters who have compassion on the misfortune of their neighbours and make room in their huts to lodge the less privileged and offer them human warmth and when possible, something to eat and wear. Tuberculosis in the Latin American countries and malaria in the African ones (two evils that can be over¬come if they are treated on time and in the right way) have taken the lives of many faithful believers. Some whose lives were taken were workers in the Lord's vineyard who left behind wid-ows, others had many children and as a result had no means to support them or give them an education. In most cas¬es, it is a lack of means that prevents a sick person from receiving the necessary atten-tion during the critical time. The Good Samaritan wishes to establish a fi xed fund in the countries affected by malaria solely for the purpose of sav-ing lives by making it possible for them to have immediate treatment. For such a thing to be possible though, we need your help, dear brothers and sisters.
Without waiting for re-quests and petitions of help to come spontaneously, we dared to inquire about the

situation of the countries that were rep-resented at the General Conference in Holland, knowing be-fore hand, that we were opening the door to ap-palling infor-mation. Con-sequently, we learnt: that in India there
are twenty five widows that survive from day to day and are sustained by what any kind hearted or compassion-ate person occasionally gives them; that in Nicaragua some of our brethren live in infra human conditions, that in the countries struck by civil wars and guer¬rillas not only do people live in uncer-tainty and are threatened by the danger of death, but from one moment to next they can lose their homes and their few belongings. On the other hand, in Haiti, the privilege of having a meal a day is an unattainable dream for some peo¬ple. Have we ever thought about those sweets that we give to our children to the detriment of their health, or those im-ported products we often buy just to sat-

isfy our appetite. The money spend on these unnecessary things would be able to feed many who are on the verge of starvation? Europe is not exempt either, there are brothers and sisters here who are living in precarious conditions too. Therefore, we should be content with what we have, including the many op-portunities that come our way to show our gratitude for the great gift of salva-tion that was brought about through the blood of our Redeemer.

"Then The EndShall Come"
We can still hear today, the Macedo-nian call from Asia that comes down to us from the Apostle Paul's time. I pray that the following words of our Lord will be fulfilled in the Asian continent. "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."(Matt24:14).
The Asian continent is the center of the world when considering popula-tion and surface area and consists of many large and small countries around China, which itself has a population of more than 1.3 bil-lion people. In the Bible, Eastern Asia was described as a little considered, heathen land. To this day, many countries in Asia worship commu-nism dreaming of an earthly paradise without God.
Countries like Vietnam, Cam-bodia, Mongo-lia, North Korea, Laos, Myanmar and China have

the communist ideology as their religion. Their dream of an earth-ly paradise without God has not lasted even a half-century. Today they are just nominal communist countries, claiming to be commu¬nist as a means of maintaining their political strength.
The result of rejecting God Communism started at the begin-ning of the 20th century. When the Soviet Union, the strongest com¬munist nation, fell about twelve years ago, communism began to break down in many other Asian countries too, including China. Communism pro¬motes atheism, choosing a curse instead of Gods's blessings. These countries de-fied God who created the heavens and earth, advocated atheism and evolution,
The Chinese Cultural Revolution is a good example of the fate of a country that rejects God. China's political system persecuted the church, burned Bibles, and imprisoned many church leaders and members. As a result and despite much effort, their fertile soil has not pro-duced crops. Famines ravaged the coun-

try and people starved. The Communist ideal of achieving an earthly paradise was lost as its people faced the prospect of hunger. History books record that the ten long years of famine and starvation resulted in discontentment among the people. Even the leaders of the Revolu¬tion could not prevent this.
This shows us the destiny of a coun¬try that rejects God. Since then China has started to open up, giving restrict-ed liberty to churches as well as some freedom of religion. The Bible is being printed again and churches are being established under the supervision of tiie;

God is just and His Word is ful-filled. Now, the soil that has not yielded many crops is fruitful trans-forming the country into one of the world's granaries.
Fall of the Communist religion Communism was an absolute reli¬gion for the godless people but it only offered them starvation and hunger, instead of the promised paradise. Their faith in the com¬munist system has been shattered, and now they thirst for some other, more meaningful way of life. At pres-ent, they have two choices. One is wor-shipping the world with its money and pleasures, the others is faith in the true God.
God created man with a desire to worship something greater than him-self. The Chinese people have this long-ing. Their hearts which where once fi lled with communism are now empty. They need something that will feed them spiritually. They are looking for gods
Is Satan aware of this? Satan has lost no time in suggesting that if they bow before him, he will give them all the

riches and glory of the world. The num-ber of people in China who love pleasure and materialism more than communism is growing at an alarming rate. Never-

"The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest." Luke 10:2. I believe that these words were writ-ten for the Asian continent, which in-cludes China.
Asia is very large. Wherever you travel by train, there are big cities with many people existing without God. How wrong it is that these people know noth-ing about the gospel and of Jesús' im-manent return! Even though there was no specific

or promise in the Bible, many Ad-ventists thought that Jesus would come before the year 2000. The year 2000 is over. Can we explain the reason why
Christ's coming has been delayed? We, as the remnant people, should be able to answer this question.
Consider the vast continent of Asia. The following words of Jesus: "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all na-tions" have not yet been fulfi lled here.
Since my fi rst visit to China in 1991 the following words have always come to mind: "The harvest truly is great but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore that Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest." Many workers are desperately needed.
Every time I visit China, I find people eager to hear the Word of God. They seem never to be satisfied. Sometimes some have given half of their years sal-ary to purchase a plane ticket instead of going by train, to reduce the time needed for travel so that they can hear more of God's precious words. Where

else in the world can we fi nd such souls? I know that this sacrifice is not a small one since their salary is less than $100 US per month.
Where can we find souls who are prepared to walk up to five hours to the meeting hall, to hear the gospel? Souls who sit eight to ten hours a day on stools without a back-support, lis-tening with intense interest and writing down everything they hear? Twenty to thirty worshiping souls all packed into a small room to avoid being detected by the government.

The Last stronghold of Communism, North Korea
I would also like to mention North Ko¬rea, which is still a strict communist na-tion, hiding behind their bamboo cur-tain. As a result of thoroughly despising the blessings of God, and worshipping communism, millions have died of hun-ger. These facts are published secretly but are well known by all. We, who en-joy freedom, can hardly understand the misery that refugees suffer. Every time I visit China, I meet North Koreans who have risked their lives trying to escape from their country. When they describe their life I cannot but help shedding many tears.
They don't know why they have such great misery. The North Korean government has thoroughly deprived the people of the freedom of worship-ing God. They have continued this for half a century. The results could not have been avoided.
The light of the gospel must reach this country. According to recent reports, many educated and upper class people are showing interest in Christianity. The people are so spiritually hungry that the Bible has become the most commonly smuggled product. In North Korea, even if the Bible costs ten month's salary, the people are still willing to pay. Of course
if they are caught there is a very heavy penalty, sometimes equal to the death sentence. In spite of all this the people still try to smuggle Bibles into the coun¬try. Our hearts are deeply moved.
The Korean Church
Korea is the only country in Asia where the Protestant Church has grown, and has an active missionary spirit. Just three years ago Brother B. Cholich brought the message to Korea and now we want to preach the gospel to the whole of Asia. We have 50 members, most of which are

elderly. For this reason we have fi nancial difficulties. Nevertheless, we are inter-ested in extending the work internation-ally, we publish and send magazines all over the world.
We are especially putting forth much effort into helping and preaching the gospel to the Chinese church, as well as refugees from North Korea. We send the Bible and Spirit of prophecy books into North Korea through the help of con¬verted North Korean refugees.
Since the North Koreans are in such great financial difficulties, it is not easy to preach the gospel there. Their prior-ity is securing a warm place to sleep and having bread to eat. The Chinese government does not treat the North Koreans as refugees but arrests them as illegal immigrants. If they then are de-ported back to their own country, they face enormous difficulties. Recently, the desperate North Koreans have even tried to enter foreign embassies, putting their lives at risk in order to flee from poverty. Only a few obtain freedom this way, but there are hundreds and thou-sands of people living this miserable life. Some of the North Koreans are on the Chinese armies wanted list with a

bounty on their heads, and so in constant fear of being caught. If caught they are returned to North Korea where they are severely tortured and imprisoned.
We have a few faithful souls among them. The Korean fi eld has been helping for years but the need seems to be end-less. Nevertheless, these faithful North Koreans smuggle Bibles and Spirit of Prophecy books into North Korea.
Shouldn't we be giving more atten-tion to those countries where there are souls who are thirsting for the truth and are even willing to die for it?
Our church should be more inter-ested in the work in Asia and so hasten Jesus' coming. All other continents have enjoyed the privilege of listening to the gospel for a many years. Sadly, for many countries in the Asian continent, this privilege was denied, and only now the door is beginning to open. If the gospel is preached here, I am sure that the end of the world will come soon.
Let's reconsider the following words. "This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come." (Matt. 24:14). Amen.

Canadian Field Conference
August 30 -September 1, 2002 The Canadian Field President, Br. Kana-garajah opened the 2002 Canadian Field Conference with great joy on Friday eve-ning of August 30, by reading the inspir-ing and uplifting words found in Psalm 122: "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.."

He then continued with the confer¬ence motto "Be thou faithful unto death" Revelation 2:10, and urged us to consider these words, for those who do have a crown of life awaiting them.
After a warm welcome to all, Br. Ivo Ionov, the Canadian Field Bible Work-er, held the Sabbath opening. He spoke about the wonderful hope God's chil-dren have of reaching heaven-the home of the redeemed. Those that shall endure unto the end shall be saved. It does not matter how many good works we do in the beginning of our Christian walk-for it is the end that counts.
We were then privileged to hear the word of God from Br. Guillermo Ga-mallo, from Spain, who was visiting Canada for the first time. He spoke to us about the time of the end and in par¬ticular about Revelation 13. He urged us to awaken from our lethargy and to take note of the fulfi llment of prophecy. Although the entire world marvels after the beast and follows him wherever he goes, we are not to do the same and fol-low the majority, instead we are to keep our eyes fixed on Christ for in Him is our salvation.
On Sabbath morning, the divine service was held by our newly-elect-ed General Conference President, Br. Branko Cholich. His message was that we should practice holy conversation wherever we go, regardless of the situ-ation we might find ourselves in. Often we are tempted to reply back to others in a manner not befi tting to a Christian: "well, it is because he goaded me into saying that" we say, or many other simi¬lar excuses. Yet, let us keep in mind that before God's eyes we have no excuse. As followers of Christ we are to faith-

fully represent Him to the world in our manner of living, the way we dress and above all in the way we speak. For in the end the Lord shall have a people in whose mouth is found no guile and who are faultless before the throne of God. Therefore, we should "be holy in all manner of conversation" 1 Peter 17:5.
Following a delicious, healthy, veg¬etarian meal, the baptismal candidates were brought to the front to be exam-ined. It was encouraging to see our faith-ful young people taking a decided stand for the Lord. The youth face many temp-tations and countless difficulties-but with God on their side they can shake the world.
Next, the Streetsville Youth present¬ed their program. The children recited memory verses and sang praises, while the older youth spoke about the history of church music throughout the ages and sang beautiful songs that were accom-panied with musical instruments. The Toronto children also presented their

program, reciting verses and psalms and sang melodious, lively songs.
After the youth program Br. Timo-thy Martin held the Testimony meeting, where many were encouraged to share their personal testimonies or experienc-es in missionary work. It would have been lovely to hear experiences from many other people but time did not permit this. Br. Cholich recounted his experiences in Asia and Africa, namely: China, Korea, Bangladesh, and Burundi. God in His infinite love and grace has been helping the work to go forward in these countries. Br. Tzevetan Pet-kov, the General Conference Secretary shared some of his many experiences in Russia and Greece. At times, he had to face many dangerous situations in his travels, such as Muslim extremists. God does not leave His children alone and with fervent prayers matters were solved. Sister Leila Mc Tavish spoke about her experiences in Fiji (some of them quite humorous) Malaysia, and Thailand. In Canada we can freely spread the gospel message, but in Ma¬laysia speaking about Christianity to Muslims is punishable by hanging. So she had to be very careful of how she spread the word of God, since it can-not be done openly. Our job is to cast our bread upon the waters, spreading the seeds of truth to the world and God will do the rest.
After a dinner consisting of fresh fruits, bread and Soya milk, Br. Tzevetan Petkov closed the Sabbath. He spoke about how we are to be faithful unto death ready to sacrifice everything for Christ. Br. Michael Mitov, the Canadian Field Bible Worker from Vancouver, gave the concluding

service of the day. He spoke about how diffi cult it is to fi nd a faithful man. Some can be faithful in difficult and trying times but during the good times they are not. God wants us to be faithful at all times-good and bad. For instance, he mentioned King Saul as an example, he was faithful to God in the beginning and in the big things, but did not fulfill the little things God told him to do. Unlike him, we must be faithful to God every step of the way.
On a sunny, Sunday morning, Br. Kanagarajah baptized four dear souls in Lake Ontario. They were: Deborah Conde, Emelina Garcia, Adam Luoranen and Bryan Urizar. Following the accep-tance of the new members in the church Br. Cholich presented the new Canadian Field Offi cers to the church, encouraging them to perform their duties faithfully.
Before lunch, Br. Guillermo Gamallo, had one last message for the church: The Sanctuary work and its importance in our lives. His presentation was very moving, and he touched the hearts of all present. Using vivid diagrams and tiny replicas of the ark and what was held within such as manna, an authen-tic nail from Israel (such as were used by Romans to crucify criminals) and so forth, he urged us to get ready to receive the Lamb of God into our lives and to consecrate ourselves completely to the Lord- 100%, not 85%, or perhaps 90% or 95%, not even 99.9% but 100%. God requires our whole heart, not half of it, we cannot be divided in our affections and have one foot in the world and the other one in heaven. God does not accept lukewarm intentions like Cain's.
We are still living in the time of grace so let us use this time wisely to give our all to the Lord and present our bodies as a living sacrifi ce ready for His service.
Soon the time came to say farewell. The workers and leaders encouraged the congregation to always remain united and to remember that the core of Christianity is love. This blessed conference came to a close with the hymn "Till we meet again." Amen.
